Sparta Rotterdam is a Dutch professional football club based in Rotterdam. Established on 1 April 1888, Sparta Rotterdam is the oldest professional football team in the Netherlands. The club currently plays in the Eredivisie, which is the highest level of football competitions in the Netherlands.
On the 1st of April 1888 the rich history of Sparta Rotterdam started, when eight students founded a cricket club called Rotterdamsche Cricket & Football Club Sparta. Sparta started as a Cricket club, but eventually in July 1888, when the young Sparta-members received a football as a present, they started playing football. This moment formed the start of the club’s primary focus on football instead of cricket.
Sparta Rotterdam plays their home games in their iconic Sparta Stadium, also known as ‘Het Kasteel’ This name refers to the old authentic castle, which is currently still part of the stadium. You’ll find a modern building on the other side of the stadium. This is our main building, which gives sponsors entrance to our business lounge during match days. The first version of the stadium was built in 1916, it was the first football stadium in the Netherlands. After lots of renovations in the past years, “Het Kasteel” now holds a capacity of 10.599 seats.
Ever since 1899, the club is known for its red and white colors. Back then when the former board of Sparta took a business trip to England, they got fascinated by the red white shirts from Sunderland Football Club. The board decided to buy some old Sunderland shirts, which led to the start of wearing a red-white jersey with a black short during their matches. Thirty years forward, the popular red-white ringed socks were introduced. And till this day, the club still wears their red-white striped jersey, black short and red-white ringed socks proudly during home-matches on ‘Het Kasteel’.
